Services and Capabilities

Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing Engineering

MEP engineering has shaped some of Jakarta's most recognisable towers. Our mechanical and electrical engineers deliver HVAC, power distribution, lighting and control systems for premium office towers and mixed-use precincts, with dedicated cooling and back-up power infrastructure for mission-critical fitouts, data centre and communications room cooling, and configurable power outlets built to support large-scale commercial operations.

Sustainability Consulting

Beca's sustainability consultants deliver environmentally sustainable design work across Jakarta's commercial property market, from design-stage energy modelling through to water conservation strategy and construction waste diversion targets. For industrial clients, this extends into carbon-footprinting, where we establish Scope 1 and 2 emissions baselines against government Green PROPER standards and international reporting frameworks.

Digital Transformation

Beca's digital consulting service uses BIM and virtual reality to catch design clashes and coordination problems before they reach the construction site, then laser scanning and 360-degree image capture to build accurate digital models of the completed construction. For buildings clients, this extends into smart buildings engineering, integrating building management systems so that mechanical, electrical and security systems are controlled and monitored from a single platform.

Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management

Beca manages EPCM delivery on complex projects in Indonesia, from design coordination through procurement and construction oversight. This includes shutdown planning for industrial clients, where minimising downtime is often the difference between a successful rebuild and a costly disruption, alongside the multidisciplinary coordination needed to bring international design teams and local delivery together on large-scale developments.

Civil Engineering

Site works, drainage and structural groundwork rarely make it into project marketing, but they're what makes a complex Jakarta development buildable. Beca's civil engineering capability covers foundation and site infrastructure design work for large-scale commercial and residential developments, work that carries extra weight in a city dealing with significant land subsidence and challenging soil conditions across much of its urban area.

Industrial Engineering

Beca's industrial engineering team supports Indonesia's minerals and metals sector with structural and mechanical engineering for processing plants, from furnace and equipment rebuilds through to the broader plant upgrades that keep extraction and processing operations running. Our team takes on projects at every stage, from early concept studies through to brownfield implementation on live sites.

Renewable Energy Consulting

Beca is a strategic partner in Indonesia's renewable energy transition through geothermal, working alongside Earth Sciences NZ under the Indonesia–Aotearoa New Zealand Geothermal Energy Programme. Indonesia is targeting 9.3 GW of geothermal generation by 2035, and Beca brings decades of geotechnical expertise to a sector that's central to the country's shift away from coal, oil and gas.

Geotechnical Consulting

Foundation design in Indonesia has to account for conditions that vary dramatically from site to site, from dense Jakarta high-rises to geothermal fields in the volcanic highlands. Beca's geotechnical engineers investigate soil and rock conditions and translate those findings into foundation designs specific to each site. Piling, ground improvement and retaining structures are all part of that scope, alongside the seismic design input required by the risk of earthquakes.

Our Work in Indonesia

Sequis Tower

Our electrical, mechanical and sustainability consulting services teams collaborated on Sequis Tower, a LEED Platinum certified office building that consumes 36% less energy and 30% less potable water than standard buildings, while achieving 90% waste diversion during construction. We helped deliver high efficiency ventilation, cooling and lighting systems, complementing gradated curtain wall fins that manage solar radiation in Jakarta's climate.

World Trade Centre 3

We provided smart buildings engineering and EPCM services for World Trade Centre 3, working closely with local and New Zealand teams to ensure resilient and futureproofed building services for this landmark 42-storey tower. The 224m structure delivered 100% standby power for tenants, backed by an automated building management system to keep cooling and lighting running efficiently.

Citibank Office Fitout

Citibank's 18,000m² office at South Quarter in South Jakarta needed the flexibility of open-plan working alongside the infrastructure required for reliable data and communications systems. Beca led mechanical and electrical engineering for the project, installing dedicated cooling and back-up power separate from the base building. The scope covered a data centre, call centre, general office space, training rooms and staff cafeteria.

Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia Plant Modernisation

Beca helped modernise the Coca‑Cola Amatil Indonesia plant in Medan, bringing innovation to large-scale manufacturing. We delivered a new PET production line that increased output by over 68% and deployed laser scanning and 360° image capture to build accurate “as‑built” models. VR was essential during the design phase to coordinate complex engineering requirements and ensure smoother, faster construction with minimal re‑work.

Tunjungan Plaza 6

In Surabaya, we applied our mechanical and electrical engineering expertise in the expansion of Tunjungan Plaza 6, one of Indonesia's largest mixed-use developments, supporting the integration of residential, office, retail and parking facilities in twin towers rising above a 13-storey podium. The development elevates shopping, living, and economic opportunities in one of East Java's fastest growing cities, contributing to ongoing urban renewal and job creation.

PT Vale Indonesia Energy and Carbon Assessment

In Indonesia's nickel sector, we've partnered extensively with PT Vale Indonesia at their Sorowako site, conducting an energy optimisation study for three ore dryers that identified seven high-impact options to improve fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. We also delivered a detailed carbon-footprinting assessment to establish a baseline of Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions, helping PT Vale's head office team meet government Green PROPER standards and global reporting targets.

PT Vale Indonesia Furnace Rebuilds

Beca has managed multiple furnace rebuild projects for PT Vale since 1997, rebuilding electric arc furnaces with EPPM and construction management. Scopes have typically included engineering design, procurement, project management and construction management, delivered by teams working across Sorowako, Auckland and Jakarta, with each day of lost nickel production during a shutdown costing PT Vale approximately USD $1,000,000. Effective shutdown management shortened these shutdown durations to a minimum.

Indonesia–Aotearoa New Zealand Geothermal Energy Programme

Beca is a strategic partner in uncovering Indonesia's vast geothermal potential, joining forces with Earth Sciences NZ to accelerate geothermal energy development under the Indonesia–Aotearoa New Zealand Geothermal Energy Programme. With Indonesia targeting 9.3 GW of geothermal generation by 2035, this collaboration brings our geotechnical focus and engineering expertise to support the country's energy transition away from fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I select an engineering consultant in Indonesia?

Qualifications-based selection, weighing technical expertise and track record over price alone, is the approach generally recommended for engineering consultants, and it matters even more on complex projects where design decisions carry long-term cost and safety implications. Before approaching a consultant, it helps to define what the project actually needs to achieve, whether that's a certification target, a production output, or a construction timeline, since this shapes which technical expertise is most relevant to evaluate.

What do engineering consultants do?

Engineering consultants generally work across disciplines including civil, mechanical, electrical, environmental and chemical engineering, though the specific mix varies by firm and market. The core roles across most projects are similar: project planning, design, and risk management, with the consultant responsible for translating a client's requirements into a design that can be built and operated safely. On industrial projects in particular, this extends into managing the documentation, timelines and shutdown planning that keep complex builds and upgrades on track.

What other services can Beca provide beyond engineering design work?

Beca's role on a project isn't limited to design and delivery. Engineering consultants can also act as an unbiased third party in disputes between owners and contractors, drawing on technical expertise to help resolve disagreements over scope, quality or specification. It's a role that depends on the consultant having no commercial stake in the outcome, which is part of why independent technical advice carries weight in these situations.

Does Beca work with international architects and developers on projects in Indonesia?

Yes, regularly. Beca's Indonesia team routinely works alongside overseas architecture firms and combines local engineers with specialists from our New Zealand and Australia offices on larger or more technically complex projects. For international developers less familiar with Indonesia's regulatory environment, this also means access to guidance on local compliance and approvals processes alongside the core engineering work.

What is PT Bimatekno Karyatama Konsultan?

PT Bimatekno Karyatama Konsultan is Beca's registered Indonesian entity, operating from the Jakarta office. For clients and partners engaging Beca in Indonesia, this is the local company name that appears on contracts and registrations, while Beca is the group brand behind the technical delivery, drawing on the same standards and engineering resources used across our other Southeast Asian and Australasian offices.
