Transitioning to renewable energy is crucial in achieving Australia and New Zealand’s ambitious emissions reduction targets, both at local and national levels.

Explore our renewable energy solutions

By shifting from traditional energy sources to sustainable alternatives like wind, water, and sunlight, we work toward a future that meets energy demands sustainably. This shift is integral to both Australia and New Zealand's commitments to achieving a net-zero economy by 2050. In Australia, we align with the strategic directions laid out in the Australian Energy Market Operator’s (AEMO) Integrated System Plan (ISP), designed to guide the National Energy Market on investment and development.

Renewable sources, unlike finite fossil fuels that adversely impact the environment, offer a clean and inexhaustible energy solution, which if designed and built effectively, will enable a long-term sustainable power supply for our current and future communities.

At Beca, we provide consulting services to guide businesses and communities through the development of renewable energy projects and connecting them to the grid. Our approach combines innovative technology with a steadfast commitment to sustainability, focusing on a seamless shift to clean energy.

Progressing renewable energy in Australia and New Zealand

Transitioning to renewable energy sources comes with challenges like high initial costs, the intermittent nature of renewables, and the need for extensive grid upgrades to accommodate new energy forms.

In Australia and New Zealand, the adoption of these technologies and energy sources is accelerating. New Zealand leads the way, with about 90% of its energy now sourced from renewables, primarily hydro and geothermal. Australia is also ramping up its solar and wind energy production, which is incentivised by government targets, subsidies, investment schemes, and private efforts. Despite these advances, fully integrating renewable systems into daily use remains a work in progress.

At Beca, we leverage our design, engineering, and advisory expertise to tackle these challenges head-on. We develop practical strategies to enhance the sustainability and efficiency of renewable energy systems, tailoring our solutions to the unique needs of your region.

Key types of renewable energy include:

  • Solar PV energy
Captures and converts sunlight into electricity using solar panels.

  • Wind energy
    Generates electricity using wind turbines.

  • Hydropower
Produces electricity from the flow of water.

  • Bioenergy
    Derives fuel from organic materials.

  • Green Hydrogen
Created by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis, powered by renewable sources.

Key renewable technologies include:

  • Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
These systems capture excess energy during peak production and release it during peak demand, to enable consistent power availability.

  • Pumped hydro
This method employs surplus energy to elevate water to higher reservoirs, generating electricity through turbines as the water descends when energy is needed.

  • Compressed air energy storage (CAES)
An innovative approach where excess energy is used to compress air in underground reservoirs. The compressed air is later released to power turbines and generate electricity on demand, offering a promising solution for long-duration energy storage.

We collaborate with a diverse range of industries to develop and implement effective, sustainable energy solutions. Through collaboration with our clients, we transform ideas into reality, shaping the future energy landscape from planning to delivery and construction. This includes:

Integrating renewable energy into existing systems
Major players in the energy market turn to us for help incorporating renewable sources into existing grids. Our approach customises energy solutions to optimise current infrastructure, supporting our partners to implement the cost-effective solutions on their projects.

Addressing challenges and demystifying renewable energy
We provide clear, detailed analysis and guidance to simplify the transition, addressing issues such as reliability, integration costs and fear of insufficient power supply leading to blackouts. We explain the effectiveness of backup options like hydropower, gas and battery storage, aiming for a continuous energy supply even when renewable sources are temporarily unavailable.

Practical solutions for our clients' real-world challenges

Turitea Wind Farm

Driving New Zealand's wind energy leadership

Beca has partnered with Mercury to develop the Turitea Wind Farm, the largest in New Zealand at 222MW. This groundbreaking project increases the nation’s renewable energy output by 2% annually, generating approximately 840GWh — enough to power over 375,000 electric vehicles or 120,000 households. Nestled atop the Tararua Ranges, just above Palmerston North, the 60-turbine farm benefits from Beca's comprehensive involvement from initial consenting phases through to ongoing project and environmental management.

Glenbrook BESS

Energising South Auckland with Glenbrook BESS

Beca is leading the transformation of energy storage with the Glenbrook BESS project in South Auckland. This initiative, featuring a 100-megawatt Tesla Megapack, addresses the region’s critical needs for enhanced electricity capacity and supply quality. Partnering with Contact Energy and Tesla, Beca has contributed extensively from the preliminary site layout and cost estimations to detailed program development, supporting robust investment decisions. This project aims to stabilise electricity supply for over 44,000 homes during peak periods and also bolsters the shift towards renewable energy.

Deakin University Renewable Energy Microgrid

Powering progress towards a decarbonised future

The 7.25-megawatt Renewable Energy Microgrid built on Deakin University’s Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus will help power research into renewable energy, informing Australia’s transition towards a decarbonised energy future. Consisting of a 7 MW solar PV system, 250 kW rooftop solar PV and battery, and a 1 MW/2 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), the solar farm, with research facilities and BESS, is located on a 14.5 hectare site at the rear of the campus. Built behind the grid, the solar farm is also integrated into Deakin’s existing 22 kV high voltage network.
