The solution to Mason Bros.' building information modelling challenge is game-changing for asset management. Using the latest cloud-based mobile technology, it gives operational teams all the information they need at their fingertips.

Mason Bros. is the first completed development in the Wynyard Quarter Innovation Precinct (WQIP). The WQIP provides 48,000m2 of commercial office space to create a sustainable urban environment that supercharges innovation and economic development, both in Auckland and New Zealand.

The three-storey, 5,600m2 Mason Bros. developer, Precinct Properties, wanted the building to be highly efficient to run from an operations and maintenance perspective, and wanted to use smart technology, namely BIM (Building Information Modelling), to make this happen. That’s where our expertise in digital asset information management and delivery came in.

Delivered into the latest cloud-based mobile technology - including Microsoft and Autodesk applications, this New Zealand - (and possibly world) first achievement allows vital asset information to be utilised by operational teams anywhere, anytime - directly from their iOS devices.

During construction, asset information was captured on site using iPads and then embedded back into the 3D environment. This included data from the supply chain, and linking essential documents (like manuals, commissioning information and warranties) to specific 3D models.

The solution enables Precinct Properties to digitally manage the full lifecycle of their building’s plant and equipment with greater efficiency, transparency and accuracy. It's got huge industry application potential too, because operational teams can use the technology to raise work orders against assets instantly while on site, also enabling more accurate financial forecasting of maintenance needs, and an unparalleled service for tenants.

Our client says

Many people talk about the benefits that BIM can deliver to a project in design and construction. Fewer are actually able to demonstrate the benefits it can bring to the asset management and operations stages, where the most value can be delivered – and Beca has been able to deliver something tangible.
