Trained as a Mechatronics Engineer, with space industry experience and a proud decade serving in the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN), Sasha Broxup has built a fascinating career for herself.
During her time in the RNZN, she was a Weapon Engineering Officer. On board a ship, the Weapon Engineering Officer is responsible for providing communication, sensor and weapon capabilities to command. Ashore, the engineer’s role is varied.
Sasha worked across several ships, and had many exciting shore positions, including leading the Weapon Engineering School, being the Capability Integration Lead on a communications upgrade, and even being part of the Chief of Navy’s personal staff.
Today she’s applying her skills as a Senior Systems Engineer at Beca, a role that allows her to continue serving New Zealand’s interests beyond the uniform.
"I enjoy that by working with Beca, I can still contribute to New Zealand’s interests by doing valuable work for defence clients."

What does ANZAC Day mean to you?
It's an opportunity to commemorate and be grateful to veterans and serving personnel that keep us safe, and to celebrate the upholding of the international rules-based order.
What’s one thing you’d like others to know about military veterans/reservists?
Each one has lots of stories that are totally different from the non-military way of life.
What were you looking for in an employer when you transitioned to civilian life?
I was looking for a people-focused company that recognises the value of people and culture. I also enjoy that by working with Beca, I can still contribute to New Zealand’s interests by doing valuable work for defence clients.
What was one of the biggest adjustments you faced moving from military service to civilian life?
Forgetting uniform standards in day-to-day life. It took me over a year before I could bring myself to wear coloured nail polish.
What transferable skills have you harnessed in your civilian career?
Leadership, communication, and connection to people from a wide array of backgrounds. The ability to think about wider implications of a job and being driven by an overarching purpose.
What advice would you give to other veterans/reservists considering a career in professional services?
The military gives you a lot of transferable skills, but it’s all about raising it in a civilian-friendly way to get a foot in the door.
As a reservist, how does Beca support you in your continued service?
By having the ability to plan my Beca work and time commitments, I’m able to fulfil my Reserve Force obligations.
What’s the proudest thing you’ve done in your civilian life?
I was part of a team that launched something into space – this was before Beca though! On a personal front, I have become a DIY queen, and together with my husband fully tore down and rebuilt a kitchen from scratch over the summer break.
