An Engineering Company in Christchurch, New Zealand

Beca is a major engineering consultancy in Christchurch, and our local team's depth of knowledge about Canterbury's soils, seismic demands and rebuild context sets us apart from generalist firms. We bring together civil, structural, geotechnical, mechanical, electrical and fire engineering alongside land surveying and environmental consulting, giving clients coordinated multidisciplinary expertise under one roof.

That breadth means fewer handovers, clearer accountability and designs that reflect the realities of building and operating in this city. From earthquake strengthening and infrastructure rebuild work to new commercial developments and environmental assessment, our Christchurch engineers work across the full range of what Canterbury demands.

Our Engineering Services

We provide a coordinated engineering team across all key disciplines, so your project moves from concept through to construction with a single accountable team rather than multiple disconnected specialists. Whether you're a council, developer, asset owner or contractor, you can access civil, structural, geotechnical, mechanical, electrical, fire and environmental engineering expertise, alongside land surveying and building consulting services.

Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is what keeps Christchurch moving and its essential services working. Our civil engineers plan and design transport routes alongside stormwater, wastewater and trunk water supply networks, and support land development by connecting new sites into existing infrastructure. We work alongside geotechnical and structural specialists to ensure roads, pavements, bridges and platforms are compatible with both local ground conditions and intended use.

Structural Engineering

In a city shaped by earthquakes, structural engineering informs almost every project. As well as working on new buildings and infrastructure, our structural team spends considerable time assessing and strengthening existing assets to enhance safety and performance. We bring geotechnical engineers, architects and building services teams into the conversation early. This approach allows structural form and services layout to develop as a coordinated design from the outset.

Geotechnical Engineering

Geotechnical engineering in Christchurch carries particular weight. The 2010 and 2011 earthquakes exposed the full extent of liquefaction risk across the city, and ground investigation has been central to rebuild decisions ever since. Our ground and soil specialists assess the viability of foundation designs, earthworks and retaining structures. We also draw on detailed knowledge of local geology, from the gravels of the Canterbury Plains to the softer soils of the coastal and riverside suburbs.

Mechanical Engineering

Building services and plant systems for Christchurch's hospitals, transport hubs and industrial facilities are designed with heating, cooling, ventilation and pumping systems developed for energy efficiency and ease of maintenance. Mechanical engineering work in these settings frequently involves tight plantrooms and critical redundancy requirements, and we pay close attention to equipment selection and control strategies so systems can be operated safely and adapted as needs change.

Electrical Engineering

Our electrical engineering services cover power distribution, lighting and control systems for buildings and infrastructure across Christchurch and Canterbury. We develop designs with clear separation of essential loads and straightforward maintenance as core principles, drawing on power systems engineering and functional safety expertise. These environments demand high redundancy, and we focus on keeping power available while work is carried out and as assets evolve.

Fire Engineering

Fire engineering defines a project's approach to life safety: how a building performs in a fire, how occupants evacuate and how structure and services are protected. We develop solutions around prescriptive code requirements, applying performance-based analysis and documenting how the design meets building consent requirements. On complex sites such as airports and hospitals, early involvement lets us resolve compartmentation, structural fire resistance and evacuation routes before they become issues.

Building Consulting

Building consulting in Christchurch presents challenges not found in most New Zealand cities. The earthquake sequence accelerated decisions about demolition, repair and rebuild that would otherwise have played out over generations, leaving a mix of new construction, partially strengthened older buildings and heritage structures. We work across condition assessments, code compliance, heritage consultation and lifecycle planning, helping owners understand their options and costs.

Environmental Consulting

Canterbury's post-earthquake land remediation legacy and ongoing infrastructure development generate sustained demand for environmental consulting expertise. Our Christchurch-based environmental consultants work with both government agencies and private developers on flood modelling, contaminated land investigations and resource consent input, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and sustainable development standards.

Land Surveying and Development

The earthquakes reshaped Christchurch's property landscape as fundamentally as its buildings, with red zone acquisitions, boundary adjustments and new subdivision activity creating unique surveying and land development challenges. Coordinating with civil and geotechnical specialists, our land team covers topographic and cadastral surveying, construction layout and GIS mapping through to bulk earthworks, internal street layouts and connections into existing water and transport networks.

Our Work in Christchurch

Some of our most significant work in New Zealand has been in Christchurch. Whatever the project, our engineers focus on understanding what matters most to you and delivering designs that fit your site, budget and programme.

Christchurch Biosolids Drying Facility

To support the city's long-term sustainability goals, Beca partnered with Christchurch City Council on the design and delivery of a new biosolids drying facility. The facility burns 100% renewable fuels to produce heat for drying, reducing waste volume while recovering energy – turning what was previously a difficult waste material into a source of nutrients for land rehabilitation.

Major Cycle Routes

Beca worked with Christchurch City Council to design and deliver over 100km of dedicated cycling infrastructure across the city, spanning busy arterial roads to quieter suburban streets. The project drew on civil, geotechnical, and transport engineering expertise to create a more liveable and sustainable urban environment.

Christchurch Airport Integrated Terminal

Beca contributed structural engineering, industrial equipment layout planning and project coordination to the transformation of Christchurch Airport's integrated terminal. The redesigned space improves the flow of passengers and operations through the terminal while accommodating the airport's growth requirements.

Waipapa Acute Services Building

The Waipapa Acute Services Building is one of New Zealand's most technically demanding healthcare facilities. Beca delivered structural, geotechnical and building services engineering alongside project management, designing systems that meet the stringent performance and redundancy requirements of a major acute care hospital.

Christchurch Hospital Energy Centre

Christchurch Hospital's Energy Centre provides the resilient power supply on which the hospital's clinical services depend. Beca led the engineering design of the facility, incorporating redundant power systems and planning for future hospital growth so the centre can continue to meet increasing demand.

Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SCIRT)

Following the 2010–2011 earthquakes, Beca played a central role in SCIRT, the collaborative alliance formed to rebuild Christchurch's underground infrastructure. Working alongside engineering and construction partners, we contributed civil, structural and geotechnical engineering across a programme that restored essential water, wastewater and transport services to the city.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early should we involve your Christchurch team in our project planning?

It’s usually best to contact us as soon as you’re starting to define the scope, budget and programme for your project, even if you don’t have drawings yet. Early conversations let us flag planning, ground or infrastructure constraints, and identify key risks and opportunities. It also helps shape a programme that gives enough time for design, approvals and procurement. That way you’re making early decisions with a clear view of the engineering implications instead of having to revisit them later.

How do you typically work with our in-house team or other consultants?

We fit into the team structure you already have, whether that means taking a lead engineering role or contributing as one of several technical specialists or other firms. At the start we agree how decisions will be made, who is responsible for what, and how information will flow. From there we keep technical discussions as open and practical as possible, so your wider team can see how engineering advice links back to design intent, construction and operations. Many of our senior people are Chartered Professional Engineers (CPEng) in New Zealand, allowing you to align roles with your own technical governance requirements.

How do you approach risk and uncertainty on complex Christchurch projects (ground conditions, consents, seismic issues)?

We start by making the main uncertainties explicit: for example, gaps in site information, ground behaviour, seismic performance expectations, or consent pathways. From there we work with you to decide what needs to be investigated, what can be managed through allowances or staging, and what should be treated as a hard constraint. Our aim is to give you a clear view of the key risks, options for dealing with them and the implications for cost, programme and performance, so you can choose the path that fits best.

What does your design and review process look like from concept through to construction support?

On most projects we move through concept, preliminary and detailed design stages, with defined checkpoints where we review assumptions, update estimates and confirm the level of documentation you need for consent and procurement. You’ll see a mix of drawings, models, calculations and reports aimed at making decisions easy to follow. During construction we can provide responses to requests for information, review key shop drawings or method statements, and attend site as agreed to help you and your contractor deal with design-related issues as they arise.

How do you communicate progress and changes during a project?

At the outset we agree how often you want updates and in what form, whether that’s structured progress meetings, email summaries or more detailed status reports tied to your governance process. As the work progresses, we highlight upcoming decisions, any emerging risks and any changes that could affect cost, timing or consents, rather than only reporting what has already been done. For more complex projects we can also help set up simple decision logs and action lists so everyone can see what has been agreed, what is still open and who is responsible for next steps.
