Beca appoints first ever Technical Fellow in Contaminated Land

Beca has welcomed two new technical experts to its group of Technical Fellows, including the first ever Beca Technical Fellow in Contaminated Land.

Phillip Ware is Beca’s new Technical Fellow in Contaminated Land and Chris Scrafton has been appointed as a Technical Fellow in Planning.

Beca Technical Fellows represent the very best of our expertise, reinforcing our technical delivery excellence and leadership within our business.

Beca Chief Technical Officer Stuart Tucker says our Technical Fellows play a critical role in driving innovation, both within our business and across their respective industries and disciplines.

“We now have more than 70 Technical Fellows across many disciplines, championing technical excellence to help deliver some of our clients’ most challenging projects and drive positive outcomes for communities.

“It’s particularly exciting to appoint our first Technical Fellow in Contaminated Land. It reflects the depth of our environmental science expertise and the growing importance of this discipline in delivering infrastructure sustainably,” says Stuart.

Auckland-based Phillip Ware says he’s looking forward to joining such a large cohort of specialists.

“With experts in so many disciplines, we can help our clients deal with environmental issues in a holistic way. This is especially true on large infrastructure projects where there’s a lot of soil being moved and a lot of decisions being made about how best to manage land contamination and deliver the best outcomes for the people who will use those spaces,” says Phillip.

Building on our expertise and experience in New Zealand, we have also been growing our contaminated land service offering and team of experts in Australia. In April, we appointed Matthew Locke as Technical Director – Contaminated Land, based in Sydney. Matthew brings more than 25 years of experience in contaminated land consulting across the UK, Middle East and Australia.

Chris’ depth of planning knowledge and ability to focus on strategic outcomes have made him one of our go-to people for delivering complex planning projects. He’s also a well-regarded planning expert witness.

He has helped shape some of New Zealand’s most significant planning and infrastructure initiatives including the Auckland Unitary Plan, City Rail Link and Christchurch Central City Recovery Plan Review.

Chris was appointed a Fellow of the NZ Planning Institute (NZPI) in 2022 - the highest qualification offered by NZPI, held by just 1% of NZPI members.
