Repairing the damage caused by the Christchurch earthquakes involved a huge programme of infrastructure work that has never been seen before in New Zealand.

When the earth shakes as it did in the 2010 and 2011 Christchurch earthquakes, the devastating impacts aren’t only limited to the infrastructure that you can see. That’s why the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team (SCIRT) was formed.

To enable Christchurch residents to continue working, travelling and living, SCIRT's task was to repair and rebuild damaged essential infrastructure such as water, storm water and wastewater systems, roads, bridges, water reservoirs and retaining walls.

SCIRT engaged four lead design organisations to design the repair and rebuild works, including Beca. Working together, the teams focussed on getting contractors involved early in the design process to maximise the value of each individual design project for the people of Christchurch, and the wider New Zealand economy.

We’ve designed a number of key council assets that are vital to Cantabrians’ everyday lives, including designing the three largest new wastewater stations and four stormwater pumping stations. 

Our structures and geotechnical experts have also designed some of the major bridge and retaining wall renewals and repairs, which form and protect lifeline routes through the city and surrounding areas.
