University of Auckland Science Centre

World class research and teaching facilities

The high tech 23,000m2 Science Centre building is the gateway to the University of Auckland’s Science Precinct.

World-class facilities provide dedicated design spaces and laboratories to carry out a wide range of innovative science research based on the premise of collaborative working and social engagement.

The $200 million facility creates an entry point from the city into the network of university buildings beyond, offering a new connection between the University’s Science Sector and the city. At street level, the façade is designed to offer a generous “window into life at the university”.

The building had a complex and diverse functional brief, and required a high level of integration and co-ordination of leading edge building systems and services. The architectural and structural design ensures the building delivers adaptable and efficient research and teaching spaces. It  exceeds strict laboratory code requirements, has flexibility for future expansion, and is arranged to facilitate exploration and collaboration, providing students with an appealing, stimulating environment.

By undergoing a robust design phase with extensive stakeholder engagement between Beca, the University of Auckland, and other consultants, the design delivers on the university's requirements and provides an operationally efficient building, with future flexibility and adaptability engrained.

The design team has achieved the client’s goal to provide a world class facility for leading edge research, teaching and learning, to attract and retain the "best and brightest".

The primary services Beca provided for the Science School include design and construction monitoring of HVAC, Plumbing, Lab Gases, Electrical, Civil and Structural Engineering.

Our Client Says

The lab had to address quite a wide range of criteria in terms of its efficiency and its safety, and I think we’ve managed to get those features and more into this laboratory environment.

Our Client Says

Beyond the safety features, the other aspect that really stands out to me is the aesthetic of the lab which is beautiful. It’s very light, lots of white, really adds to the visual nature of the space…very streamlined… and really adds to the students learning experience.
