Beca Singapore Appoints New Business Director of Structural Engineering

Beca is excited to announce the appointment of Weng Yuen Kam as Business Director for Structural Engineering in Singapore with effect from 13 Sept 2021.
In line with Beca’s strategy to grow and strengthen its Asia business, Weng Yuen Kam (Kam) has joined Beca’s Singapore operations as Business Director in the Buildings Civil & Structural (C&S) team, reporting to both Neil Horsfield, General Manager, Building Structures and Tan Keok Siew, Operations Manager.

Kam will be responsible for growing a differentiated service offering in the Singapore market through technical and delivery excellence. He will be working closely with the wider Beca global group in driving a stronger and more integrated Global Structures Buildings business, and in capitalising the digital transformation opportunities in Singapore. Kam will be joining a successful C&S team that has delivered some of the most iconic buildings in Singapore including Marina One, DUO Towers, Raffles Hotel refurbishment and Punggol Waterway Terrace 1.

“Whilst the COVID-19 pandemic has presented an enormous challenge to the global business environment, there will be significant opportunities as economies emerge and recover. I believe Beca is well-placed to take advantage of these opportunities, leveraging the successful COVID-19 response in Singapore and New Zealand. It will be an exciting time in Singapore with its sustained investment in digital transformation, and environmental and social sustainability," said Kam.

Prior to his new role, Kam had been based in Beca’s New Zealand business in Auckland where he had taken a key role in the engineering design of several high-profile projects, including the University of Auckland's Recreation and Wellness Centre, SKYCITY's Horizon Hotel and the New Zealand International Convention Centre. He brings a wealth of experience and a diverse range of engineering skills, including major project delivery, advanced structural analysis, seismic engineering and digital engineering expertise.

Kam also contributed significantly to Beca's award-winning Beacon earthquake impact assessment system and Beca's ground-breaking cloud-based nonlinear seismic assessment tool for masonry buildings. More recently, Kam has been directing an internal start-up business within Beca, focusing on seismic resilience of non-structural and building services elements.

Lee Ang Seng, Managing Director, Singapore and Myanmar said, “Kam has a proven track record of blending strong technical execution with rigorous risk and commercial management to successfully deliver major projects. Having him onboard will further bolster our technical capability to deliver better value to clients and grow our business in Singapore and the region."

“Sustaining a strong presence in the South East Asian markets is a key focus of Beca’s Global Buildings Business. Kam’s presence in the region will boost our already successful C&S business in Singapore, strengthening and diversifying our service offerings more broadly. It’s wonderful that Kam is taking this opportunity to make a real impact on the built environment in the region,” said Neil Horsfield, General Manager, Building Structures.

Kam is an award-winning Chartered Professional Engineer in New Zealand and a Fellow of New Zealand Society in Earthquake Engineering. He was awarded the FIDIC Young Professional of the Year award in 2019, the ACE New Zealand Future Leader award in 2018 and New Zealand Young Engineering of the Year finalist in 2014. He holds a BEng (Honours), BCom in Economics and PhD in Civil Engineering, all from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand.
