Beca to deliver Maribyrnong River Bridge Package for Melbourne Airport Rail

Beca in partnership with Cross Valley Rail are thrilled to be appointed as Lead Consultants for the Maribyrnong River Bridge Package (MRP), a crucial link in Melbourne’s long-awaited Airport Rail project!
A vital piece of public infrastructure, the new rail bridge will span 550 metres across the Maribyrnong River Valley and will be 50 metres high – making it Victoria’s second tallest bridge after the Westgate Bridge.

In our role as Lead Design Consultants on this $200 million project, we’ll be working closely alongside partners FCC Construction, Winslow and Rail Projects Victoria.

This follows our appointment earlier this year alongside Arup and Airbiz to deliver the design for the next stage of Melbourne Airport’s Third Runway (M3R) project, and is a reflection of our expertise in Civil Structure Engineering and Rail Infrastructure Projects.

To be constructed alongside the existing heritage bridge built in the 1920’s, the Maribyrnong River Bridge Package will form the crucial link between Melbourne International Airport at Tullamarine and the city’s existing railway network.

It will connect Victoria’s global gateway with Melbourne’s Central Business District (CBD) by heavy rail for the very first time, with a trip to take around 30 minutes!

“We’re excited to work with our partners to deliver this project for Victorians and visitors to enjoy for decades to come, helping make everyday better by connecting our airport to the heart of Melbourne”, said Matt Turinski – Manager Transport & Infrastructure Victoria at Beca.

Construction of the broader Melbourne Airport Rail will begin in 2022 with a target opening date of 2029, subject to approvals.
