Beca, supported by Arup and Golder Associates, has been appointed as lead engineering design consultant to progress the design development phases for Melbourne Airports’ Runway Development Program (RDP).
Joe Walsh, Beca RDP, Project Director, said Beca is looking forward to continuing its 20 year relationship with Melbourne Airport.
“Our team has been working collaboratively with Melbourne Airport for many years and in particular with the earlier phases of this project, we’re proud and excited to be part of this generational change at Melbourne Airport and the resultant social and economic impacts it brings to Melbourne and the state of Victoria,” he said.
If approved, the project will deliver a parallel runway system that includes a new third runway with an east-west orientation, and an extension to the existing east-west runway making it capable of handling all aircraft types.
More than 35 million passengers used Melbourne Airport during the 2016/17 financial year, with the growth forecasted number to be 60 million per annum. The current Melbourne Airport runway system can handle 240,000 aircraft movement a year, with the number expected to reach almost 350,000 by 2033.
