High levels of nutrients in waterways can reduce water quality and harm marine life. We’re helping to make sure this doesn’t happen.

Farm run-off and human and animal waste are sources of nutrients that, when they find their way into waterways, can cause a range of environmental harm. Biological nutrient removal (BNR) uses bacteria to remove these nutrients from the wastewater stream – making it healthier and more environmentally friendly.

Watercare is expanding its processing facilities at the Mangere wastewater treatment plant by building a new BNR facility. By acting as Watercare’s professional engineering advisors and providing detailed design and construction management services, CH2M Beca are helping to make it happen.

The BNR facilities ensure Watercare continues to meet its stringent operating conditions and operate in an environmentally sustainable way, both now and in the future. It also means that the wastewater system will be able to cope with the demands of Auckland’s growing population.
