SCADA System Upgrade, Fiji
Fiji’s water and wastewater assets are spread across multiple islands and locations throughout the country, adding complexity to the job of the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) who are responsible for managing this vital network.
With access to safe, reliable water essential for the health of Fiji’s 930,000 people, the authority sought better visibility of the assets across its network. Their existing SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) System was functional, but had limited monitoring capability, thus constraining the network’s future growth.
What we did
With these challenges in mind, WAF selected Beca HunterH2O back in 2015 to deliver the upgrade and expansion of their existing SCADA system. Working in partnership with the authority, our team helped establish a centralised National Control Centre in Suva, enabling real-time monitoring across more than 120 remote sites. Additionally, field monitoring equipment was upgraded and expanded, enabling more sites to be monitored cost-effectively across the network.
The result: Smarter water management
Since its completion in 2016, the upgraded SCADA system has provided greater operational visibility for WAF across their network and created a platform that can grow with Fiji’s evolving water infrastructure needs.
Beca HunterH2O also established an ongoing support arrangement with WAF, involving further projects which have continued to build, expand and improve the system that is still in place today.
Beyond the technology itself, a key focus of this project was building local capability and resilience – a goal we achieved by providing mentoring and hands-on training for Water Authority of Fiji technicians. By working alongside local teams throughout delivery, we helped build the knowledge and capability needed to operate and maintain the system long into the future.
A decade later, the upgraded system continues to ‘make everyday better’ by improving water distribution management, strengthening water quality monitoring and supporting faster responses to operational issues. This has paved the way for a more resilient, smarter water network.
