Shaping the future of Aviation
Beca brings 50+ years of trusted Aviation expertise in engineering, design and advisory services, helping airport leaders across New Zealand and beyond.
What sets us apart
At Beca we understand that an airport is a complex system. When an airport asset needs renewing, there are many dependencies to consider. Keeping the airport operational and minimising the impact on passenger movements is key.
At Beca we work alongside airport leaders - closer, connected, looking beyond the airport system, to help leaders confidently shape and make sound investment decisions for the future.
Ways we can help:
Improve the asset
A taxiway needs extending, a terminal renewing or ground lighting needs adapting to meet what the airport needs next - we can help shape this.
Keep operating
Flights, passengers, baggage, freight and essential services still need to move safely while work happens - we can provide a solution for this
Manage passenger flow
Staging and access decisions can change how passengers, staff and operators move through the airport - we can help plan for this.
Keep systems connected
Changes can affect utilities, technology, infrastructure and other projects already underway across the airport - we can help provide a solution for this
Protect performance
Today’s decision can affect cost, capacity, resilience and commercial performance well beyond the immediate project - we can help you understand this.
Keep options open
Choices made now can preserve flexibility for future growth and change, or make it harder - we can help you understand this.
How we work with airport leaders:
50+ years of experience working with airports across New Zealand and internationally means:
- Understanding the context
We know how to deliver within the constraints of an airport environment. - Knowing the system
We anticipate how changes affect the entire system. - Exploring the possibilities
We give you the technical information you need to consider options. - Shaping what’s next
We help you make an informed decision, to realise your vision.
Airport Case Studies
As the Southern seawall that protects Wellington’s airport reaches the end of its life, Beca has worked alongside Wellington International Airport Ltd (WIAL) to deliver a strategic resilience project to renew it.
Wellington International Airport is located in Lyall Bay, Wellington, on the south coast of New Zealand’s North Island. The site is directly exposed to southerly swells propagating from the Southern Ocean and South Pacific Ocean.
WIAL’s Southern Seawall Renewal Project helps to safeguard the long-term operation of the airport against coastal hazards, increase resilience to climate change, and reduce the increasing maintenance demands of the existing seawall.
Affordability and value for money are key project considerations. Airline consultation is also an important part of the project.

Te Hono New Plymouth Airport's terminal has been transformed from a 1960's structure into a spacious, modern building. It now forms an attractive gateway to the majestic Taranaki region of Aotearoa New Zealand.
New Plymouth Airport was originally built in 1966 to service 50,000 passengers annually. With 411,000 passengers passing through the airport in 2016, Wayne Wootton, Chief Executive at the time saw the need for a new terminal as an opportunity to think strategically about its future needs and role as “the gateway to the Taranaki region”. A vital connection for New Zealand’s most remote community
800km east of Christchurch lies the Chatham Islands. Surrounded by the South Pacific Ocean, its 620 residents rely on the airport as their crucial connection with mainland New Zealand. Strengthening this vital social and economic link through major runway and terminal upgrades was the focus of the government-funded ‘Longer and Stronger Programme’.
