High profile tenants (like PricewaterhouseCoopers) require high profile developments. Christchurch’s PwC Centre delivers this, and much more. Its innovative structure, featuring low-damage design technology, ensures earthquake resilience.

Walk through Christchurch’s West End business district and you’ll discover a six-storey striking office building, complete with unique printed façade – the PwC Centre. Our client’s (Bridgewater Properties) brief was clear: an A-grade design (both structurally and aesthetically) to create a modern, high quality and professional environment for their anchor tenants (including PwC).

Not only that, it needed to be pragmatic, cost-effective, structurally-sound and, importantly for Christchurch, resilient to earthquakes.

To achieve this, we worked closely with the client, contractor, steel fabricator and the architect, using a different approach to procurement. This included early structural engineering involvement (before the architect came on board), to develop various approaches with the client, unlocking the development’s full potential. Plus, the best architectural design was chosen via a competition, and innovative structural elements were developed throughout the design process by collaborating with supply chain partners.

All of which set the scene for our new and advanced structural design, created to meet our client’s exact needs and not seen before in New Zealand. The low-damage design technology achieves a cost-effective building with high levels of seismic resilience. The smartness of this technology is matched by the architect’s smart design, creating a striking landmark for Christchurch, day and night.
