Beca recognised for leading industry best practice at annual RMLA Awards

On Saturday 23 September Beca, together with SouthernSkies and Auckland Council, received the RMLA Publication Award for ‘Erosion and Sediment Control for Land Disturbing Activities in the Auckland Region (GD05).

The RMLA Award acknowledges publications which enable a better or more complete understanding of resource management law, theory and practice by the resource management community or interested general public. GD05 is now recognised as the best current knowledge and practice in erosion and sediment control. The International Erosion Control Association, representing the industry, endorses the advancement that GD05 has made to resource management practice.

Hugh Leersnyder, Technical Director – Environments at Beca, said the extensive, international analysis to create the document will go a long way to ensuring the risks relating to erosion and sediment discharge during earthworks are accessible and can be more easily managed.

“The discharge of sediment from earthworks into the fresh and marine water receiving environments is a significant resource management issue for the Auckland region. Sediment discharges and sedimentation not only affect the natural and physical environment, but also the social, economic and cultural wellbeing of the region,” Hugh said.

“The team interrogated international best practice and engaged with industry practitioners in erosion and sediment control design and implementation to ensure the publication reflected the latest in scientific advancement, industry best practice and statutory framework,” he said.

A process of regular industry peer review through the document’s development was used to produce a web-based guideline of GD05 that is clear in format, easy to follow, well-illustrated with photographs and diagrams of best practice.

“The publication now gives those in the industry clear guidance on best practice, which should advance the practices and procedures for managing erosion and sediment discharges during earthworks,” he said.

“We’re thrilled to be recognised by RMLA with this Publication Award.”
