Beca has been appointed as the runway design consultants for the Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion Project.
The Runway Design – Airport Expansion Project will set the foundation for Sunshine Coast Airport’s future. The expansion will meet the requirements of the growing region, and will continue to support the development of the region’s economy.
Joe Walsh, Project Director – Airports, said Beca was looking forward to applying its solid industry expertise to the expansion of the Sunshine Coast Airport.
“We have been working with the aviation industry throughout the Asia Pacific for more than 30 years, delivering more than 20 airports internationally and over 150 airport projects in Australian and New Zealand. It’s fair to say, we know airports,” Joe Walsh said.
“We are excited to be working in South East Queensland to help the Sunshine Coast Council to achieve its development strategy and provide greater access to this beautiful part of Queensland,” Joe said.
The project will deliver a 2,450m x 45m Code E compliant runway, an expanded apron, new access roads and utilities. The new runway will be able to cater for new aircraft such as the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 and, once complete, will be used by all Regular Passenger Transport aircraft.
The new runway will provide direct flights and improved connectivity to destinations across Australia, Asia and the Western Pacific. It will generate jobs and economic growth, boost tourism, help export businesses and secure air access to the Sunshine Coast for generations to come.
In combination with sub-consultants Arup, Golder Associates, LEAPP, BTM WBM and WT Partnership, Beca has been selected as the design consultant to deliver the design. Design has commenced with the proposal to complete the construction and associated facilities in time for the start of operations in 2020.
Once operational the new runway is expected to contribute $4.1 billion to the Sunshine Coast economy in its first 20 years with 3,500 fewer dwellings affected by noise.
