Beca boosts defence business with high profile recruits

Beca has appointed Gerry Christian AM as Director Business Development and Michael Richardson as Delivery Director and Practice Lead to its growing Australian defence business, commencing 3 April 2017.

Beca Managing Director Australia, Craig Lee, said Gerry and Michael join a proven government and defence team already delivering results for its clients.

“The addition of Gerry and Michael to the team sets Beca up to deliver greater value and scale to support our clients with new services, greater innovation and delivery support to meet their needs,” Craig said.

Gerry will be supported by a strong business development team to maximise the company’s award-winning professional services and engineering experience. He will be the Canberra-based strategic anchor for Beca’s busy government and defence team.

“Gerry is an excellent fit for Beca. I expect our strong year on year growth will accelerate through Gerry’s leadership as we continue to meet increasing client demand in the years ahead,” Craig said.

Gerry’s distinguished career in the Royal Australian Navy, together with extensive and successful industry career, means he’s well placed to complement our already diverse defence businesses here in Australia,” he said.

Gerry Christian, a Member of the Order of Australia, held senior roles within the Royal Australian Navy, including Commander Task Group 55.1 in the Persian Gulf; Commanding Officer HMA Ships NEWCASTLE and MELBOURNE; Commander Patrol Boat FEG and Senior Naval Officer Northern Australia; Director General Maritime Development; and Australian Naval Attaché in Washington DC. Most recently he was the Head of Strategy at thyssenkrupp Marine Systems. Prior to this, Gerry spent nearly seven years upon leaving the Navy as Director International Business Development (Mission Systems and Training) for Lockheed Martin Australia.

Gerry Christian said he was looking forward to joining a company he has enjoyed worked with client-side for many years.

“I’ve worked with Beca from the client-side in Australia and New Zealand for a long time, and have always been impressed by their culture,” Gerry said.

“Beca has a different style in the way they work with clients—one that is always focused on getting the best result for their clients. It was great to see that recognised in the 2017 Client Choice awards in March,” he said.

Joining Gerry is former Executive Director for the Naval Technical Bureau, Michael Richardson. Michael will lead delivery of Beca’s expanding suite of projects across its defence and government portfolio.

Michael joins Beca following a successful engineering career with the Royal Australian Navy, having held positions including Executive Director, Naval Technical Bureau, Director of Capability Development, Capability Development Group, Foreign Military Sales Officer, Washington DC among other senior roles.

Beca draws on the longstanding experience of its team to deliver a range of advisory and related engineering services to the Australian and New Zealand defence and government sectors in the areas of acquisition, sustainment, business improvement and infrastructure.
