Painting the Singapore skyline green - Marina One and DUO open

Two of Beca’s largest and most iconic building projects in Singapore - Marina One and DUO - are finally complete. Seven years in the making, the highly environmentally sustainable buildings were officially opened on the evening of 15 January 2018 by Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his Malaysian counterpart, Najib Razak.

The Marina One and DUO joint development projects are both mixed-use; each comprising of office, retail and residential spaces. DUO is also home to Andaz – a luxury, boutique-style hotel by the Hyatt Hotels Corporation.

Environmental sustainability is at the heart of both developments, clearly seen in the construction of the ‘Green Heart’ located in Marina One’s shared central space. Positioned over several floors, the green oasis brings together a diverse range of tropical flora and promotes sustainability through the use of LED lights controlled by motion sensors, advanced air handling units and rainwater harvesting. The ‘Green Heart’ hopes to advocate biodiversity around the city state, in line with the master plan to build a ‘City in the Garden’.

Irene Yong, Director of Building Services (Singapore) and the Environmentally Sustainable Design lead for Marina One, said that the completion of one of the most anticipated projects in town achieved environmental sustainability by benchmarking against the Singapore’s Building & Construction Authority (BCA) Green Mark Scheme (Platinum ratings) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

“This mega-project demonstrates exceptional energy and water savings, good indoor environment quality and good practices in environment protection throughout the project life cycle. The project has achieved approximately 20% reduction in cooling load and more than 30% reduction in energy consumption from the baseline code compliant requirements. It has done this by making the most of passive design, energy efficient features such as heat recovery, motion sensors, regenerative lifts, and water efficient features including the provision of water sub-meters and a rainwater harvesting system to minimize potable water consumption & wastage,” she said.
