B-tune wins Supreme Award at The Beca 100 Innovation Awards

B-Tune our Building Tuning Technology has been recognised for outstanding innovation, winning the Beca 100 Innovation Awards - Supreme Award at Beca’s annual Technical and Delivery Conference last Friday 18 October.

Over 60 entries from across Beca were received and 19 were selected as award recipients – receiving either a Merit, Highly Commended, Excellence or Special Award. Excellence Award winners were then required to present a six-minute pitch at Beca’s Technical and Delivery Conference. The ultimate winner – B-Tune – received the Supreme Award following an extensive judging process by industry judges including several external to Beca.

Supreme Award winner ‘B-Tune’ brings together our experienced building scientists and engineers with advanced technology to provide cost-effective energy savings and increased comfort for building users.

B-Tune has been led by Dr Shaan Cory, whose PhD in building science explored the feasibility of converting NZ's building stock to net zero-energy. On winning the award, B-Tune co-creator Michael Howden said, “It's an honour to be able to work on this type of innovation to reduce building energy usage – which is good for the planet and our clients”.

Launched in celebration of our 100th birthday, the Beca 100 Innovation Awards is an internal awards programme showcasing exceptional innovation across Beca. The awards recognise and celebrate the industry-leading thinking, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit that will drive Beca’s future.

Other award recipients this year included innovative new applications for AR, VR, BIM model data, machine vision, and 3D modelling technology; digital seismic assessment tools – including Beacon (which received an Excellence Award); an accelerated infrastructure delivery method; a digitally-led iwi engagement approach; an operational smart app for high-value manufacturing, and many more.

Craig Price, Chief Technical Officer says the awards and calibre of entries highlight the innovative spirit that is in our Beca DNA. “With the world changing quickly around us, innovation is critical to our future, and so fostering new ideas and creativity within our business is a priority for us.”

“These Awards have demonstrated that our people – across all parts of Beca – are passionately committed to driving innovation, and we are committed to supporting and enabling them to reach their full potential. We’re so excited to see how far they go and the potential value they can create for our clients, communities and environment.”

The Beca 100 Innovation Awards is the first activity celebrating our 100th birthday. In 2020 we’ll be profiling the award recipients throughout our centennial year – so stay tuned!
