Jon Williams (Group Delivery Manager – Technical Practice) was honoured at our annual Leadership Conference last Friday, appointed to Chief Specialist - Project and Digital Delivery.
The appointment recognises Jon’s significant contribution to Beca, in particular his technical expertise, external reputation and proven judgement in balancing risk, commercial and technical drivers.
There can only be one Chief Specialist in a particular field within Beca at any one time.
Executive Chairman, David Carter presented the award, highlighting the tremendous value Jon has contributed to the business and wider engineering community.
“Jon is one of those rare individuals who is sought after for his professional leadership, both internally and externally” says David. “He delivers in the present while preparing for our future.”
Jon joined our building services team over 20 years ago, with specialist expertise in electrical system design and implementation, vertical transportation design, and project and design management. Having held a number of roles in our Building Services team, he’s led the delivery of a number of large projects in Indonesia including the vertical transport strategy for the 111-storey Signature Tower, and Princes Wharf, Auckland Hospital, and Wiri and Paremoremo prisons in New Zealand. In parallel with these project-specific roles, he also leads risk reviews and mitigation for the global Buildings business.
In 2014, Jon’s role transitioned into ‘Business Director – Practice Development’ which added a Group-wide overview of design software and Building Information Modelling (BIM) to his responsibilities. A key focus in this role has been using BIM to drive a positive change in the building industry and working with clients to help achieve this.
His Group-wide influence was formally recognised in May 2017, with a new title of ‘Group Delivery Manager – Technical Practice’, with a purview across digital delivery, information management, innovation and technology, technical delivery, as well as Beca’s relationships with technical industry bodies and academic institutions.
Outside of Beca, Jon chairs the New Zealand Chartered Professional Engineers Council, sits on the MBIE BIM Acceleration Committee, and is member of industry advisory group for AUT engineering school. He has had significant involvement in the drafting and updating of the NZ BIM Handbook and the NZ Construction Industry Council Design Documentation Guidelines.
With this appointment, Jon joins the ranks of only four other Chief Specialists – including Do Van Toan, Ian Billings, Bruce Marks and Alan Powell who were appointed in 2014.
