Courtney Chapman wins Women Leaders in Earthquake Engineering Award

Congratulations to Courtney Chapman, Beca Senior Structural Engineer, who received one of two 2020 QuakeCoRE/NZSEE Women Leaders in Earthquake Engineering Awards from the New Zealand Society of Earthquake Engineering (NZSEE).

Courtney has recently returned home to Wellington, New Zealand after spending eight months in Groningen in the far north of the Netherlands representing Beca in a client's office, where they have been contributing to the mitigation of risks from gas-extraction-induced earthquakes to residential homes for more than four years.

Prior to that, Courtney was heavily involved in recovery efforts to get damaged winery facilities in Marlborough back up and running after the Seddon and Kaikoura earthquakes. There, she was a pivotal link between winery owners, insurers, Beca designers and construction contractors, to get damage scoped, repairs designed, priced and built within operating wineries.

The award, worth NZ $10,000, recognises and honours young woman in the developing or expanding stage of their careers who have been involved in industry-leading, innovative solutions to problems in earthquake engineering. Its intent is to support increased participation of women in leadership roles in earthquake engineering and the awardees are expected to pass this intent forward through outreach and mentorship to other young women to further enhance diversity.
