Changing business models from a manufacturer to an importer meant Holcim required new infrastructure to supply the New Zealand market. With the design of two new import terminals, we’ve helped Holcim transform the way they do business.

We conducted thorough engineering and geotechnical investigations across various ports to suggest the best locations for the new terminals – Timaru and Auckland.

As the new dome terminals were the first of their kind in New Zealand, consenting the Auckland site was seen as the top risk to the project proceeding. Our team’s understanding of visual effects assessment, the planning framework and experience within Auckland Council helped us map out a successful outcome.

Our early, open and collaborative engagement with the Council and other stakeholders resulted in a non-notified consent within six weeks of lodgement. Holcim then assembled the best integrated, collaborative team for the project, led by Downer, Van Aalst, Domtec International and Beca.

Used elsewhere in the world but an Australasian first, dome storage was identified as an affordable and durable solution to meet Holcim’s cement storage needs. This approach reduced the overall construction cost and improved overall operability of the site.

Collaboratively, the team achieved all requirements, delivering the project within budget and ahead of time. The new terminals also reduces ongoing operational greenhouse gas emissions. Holcim are now able to take advantage of a global surplus of high quality cement to supply the New Zealand market and have closed their aging Westport Cement Works.

The project was delivered safely and effectively against a very tight budget and timeframe and the two terminal storage silos are the first monolithic concrete domes to be constructed in Australasia. A large part of the success of this project is due to the outstanding commitment of the integrated team.

Two great import terminals are a testament to the collaborative working relationship between Holcim, Beca, Downer and Van Aalst. The final system can unload ships containing up to 35,000 tonnes of cement in only a few days.
