Beca has joined forces with NZTA (New Zealand Transport Agency), Fletcher and Higgins to deliver a second Manukau Harbour crossing and approximately 6km of approach motorway. With a total value of over $235million, the project aims to increase the capacity of the existing State Highway 20, substantially reducing travel time between Central Auckland and Auckland Airport.
A second harbour bridge is being built to the east and at the same level as the existing Mangere Bridge. Once completed, the bridge will carry four southbound lanes of traffic plus a bus shoulder lane, with the existing bridge carrying four northbound lanes of traffic plus a northbound bus shoulder lane. North and south of the bridge the motorway is being widened to accommodate three traffic lanes and a bus shoulder lane in each direction.
Our experience on large scale roading projects is enabling Beca to deliver a broad spectrum of services at Manukau, including design (geometrics, civil, structures, geotechnical, stormwater and survey), statutory planning, stakeholder management and consultation, environmental management, quantity surveying, procurement and cost management.
The Harbour crossing will have local, regional and national benefits for business, industry and tourism. It forms a key part of a Western Ring Route which, when completed, will provide a continuous motorway link around Auckland from Manukau to Greenhithe.
The project is scheduled for completion in 2011, in time for the Rugby World Cup.
