In February 2008 Beca was commissioned by Heineken to develop a Project Data Book for SP Brewery, Papua New Guinea to support staged major site upgrades over a five year period.
SP Brewery is owned by Asia Pacific Breweries (APB), who in turn is owned by Heineken and Fraser and Neave out of Singapore. The Project Data Book was accepted and approved by the APB board in June 2008 with Beca awarded the first stage of a 94M Kina (AUD$50M) capital works program across SP Brewery’s Port Moresby and Lae sites. This work would be implemented over a two and a half year period.
Key scope items included:
- Project management services
- Site contract administration
- Design of:
- Site building works including new Brewhouse building, warehouse extension and packaging hall extension at the Lae site
- New empty goods warehouse at POM and extension to the fermenter tank farm
- Site services capacity upgrade including major power upgrades, new Gensets, refrigeration upgrades and ancillary services
- Development and award of major Vendor contracts working closely with Heineken Group Supply Chain for a new Brewhouse and Canning line at the Lae site
- Major upgrades to bottling lines across both sites
- Installation of eight fermenter tanks site and 6 bright beer tanks at Port Moresby, and two bright beer tanks at the Lae site.
Beca worked closely with the SP Brewery team and Heineken in the development and award of major vendor contracts and the Beca design team was responsible for integrating plant parameters into building designs. Beca participated in the negotiations and award of these major contracts at Heinekens head office in Zouterwoude, Holland. Contracts were awarded to international vendors for the Brewhouse, Canning line, tank supply, refrigeration plant and bottling lines.
The project was delivered on program and within budget. One of the key success factors and more challenging aspects of working in PNG was the ability of the Beca team to manage the installation program and coordinate the interfaces between international vendors and local construction companies.
A key milestone was achieved when the new Brewhouse at Lae was commissioned in November 2009 and this was recognized at an SP Board meeting with key Heineken and APB members present where Beca was awarded a commemorative "First Brew" plaque.
Beca has just completed a revised PDB which outlines the scope of projects for the next three years, and this document is in the process of review and approval to ratify continuation of the site capital works program, which Beca are well placed to deliver.
