Christchurch South Police Station

Located on a main commuter road, the new building represents a bold statement with high visibility and accessibility to the local community.

The New Zealand Police engaged Beca to provide new community police premises at a more prominent site in South Christchurch. Beca supplied full architectural and engineering services, including civil and structural, mechanical and electrical, fire survey and traffic services.

The two-storey 1500m2 building houses police patrols, general office and administration space, and was officially opened in September 2009 by Police Minister Judith Collins. The ceremony marked the end of the Sydenham Police Station – an old single-storey house and additional building hidden in back streets and difficult to find.

A key requirement of the building was the need to remain operational in the event of a natural disaster and provide security to the community. Both the structural and building services design aim to address this. Piles of up to 13m in depth were required to address the high likelihood of liquefaction in an earthquake, and an in situ suspended floor slab was designed and detailed to reduce the effect of liquefaction. Emergency backup measures are in place for electricity, and sufficient water to last three days is held in storage.

Beca undertook an unofficial GreenStar assessment of the building to demonstrate its alignment with the rating system. Energy efficient systems were implemented as standard, including VRV reverse cycle heat pumps, lighting control through daylight, and occupancy sensors throughout the building.

As part of the design process, Beca carried out significant stakeholder consultation in the form of user groups held with Area Commanders, officers and general staff. These proved successful in aligning stakeholder expectations and delivering the project within budget.
