After a period with Beca's mining and metals team in New Zealand, Steve has recently returned to the Beca Industrial group in China. His project experience spans several areas, and in depth knowledge in two markets - food and beverage and mining and metals.
Steve joined Beca in 1996, and after graduating in mechanical engineering joined the industrial team in Wellington, New Zealand. Having gained some excellent experience, he was transferred to the Beca China team where he worked on several food and beverage and metals processing projects, where he gained first hand knowledge of 'how to get the job done' in China.
Having gained more experience in New Zealand, the lure of China called him again – this time for four years starting as mechanical construction manager on the Dalian Nickel Foam Plant. Steve led Beca teams on several large, multi-million dollar industrial projects in the region, covering design management, procurement construction management and overall project management.
Starting in 2006, he managed the General Mills Shanghai Dumplings project, where Beca provided concept and definition studies as well as the EPCM services for a 6,500m2 dumpling factory and a 1,500m2 Haagen Dazs factory on a shared site.
Steve has a special understanding of production facilities and then integration of plant upgrades and shutdowns that can only come from first had experience and 'living the job'. He was the engineering manager for Phase One of the PT Inco Coal Conversion Project, where, as a cost saving initiative, the client wanted to use pulverised coal to replace oil as the heating fuel for the rotary ore dryers at the plant.
His dedication to work along side our clients at their facilities internationally has given Steve the opportunity to develop a wider skills base and greater understanding of a variety of clients’ needs. "The ability to see the big picture overview and put yourself in your client's position greatly assists in developing a successful project outcome," he says.
