Shane is a recognised leading authority in road safety research in New Zealand and is active internationally in this field.
Shane has led the transportation team in Beca's Christchurch office since its inception in 1999. While his experience spans a number of transport disciplines, including strategic transport planning, economic evaluation, scheme development and land development, he specialises in road safety studies and road safety research and more specifically the development of crash prediction models. He has developed crash prediction models for a variety of urban and rural intersections and road links, including roundabouts, traffic signals, motorways and arterial routes and models for specific road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.
A multi award winner, Shane has a PhD and has written more than 40 publications on the subject. He is a regular speaker at conferences and at Universities in New Zealand, Australia and the United States. He is an international member of one of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Road Safety Committees (ANB20) and regularly attends the TRB Annual Meeting (conference) in Washington DC. In 2010 he set-up a subcommittee, focused on research in pedestrian and cycle crash relationships.
Shane has a strong engagement with both local and international universities, including presentations, seminars and co-supervision of post-graduate students. He is an Adjunct Senior Fellow in the Department of Civil Engineering at Canterbury University, where he lectures in road safety.
Shane's crash models are included in the New Zealand national economic evaluation manual, where they are used, often alongside crash data, to calculate the benefits of crash improvement projects. Shane plays a key role in Beca's ongoing programme to develop and roll-out road safety modelling/analysis tools and chairs Beca’s national road safety group.
