"One of New Zealand's preeminent geotechnical engineers, Toan has the experience to assist with turning geologically challenging environments into successful projects."
Toan has extensive experience on projects that have presented special challenges. Curiosity and an abiding interest in engineering geology has kept him at the forefront of development over his 30 years in the field.
Toan has written some 20 papers and received seven awards; and his experience covers foundation engineering, heavy duty pavements, land stability, earthquake engineering, retaining walls, deep basements, marine engineering and tunnelling. In 2007, Toan was invited to deliver the New Zealand Geomechanics Lecture in Australia and in New Zealand.
A Fellow of the Institute of Professional Engineers, New Zealand, Toan has directed the geotechnical input for such iconic developments as Auckland International Airport Upgrading works, Britomart Transport Centre, Sky City and Sky Tower, Northport’s new terminal at Marsden Point, the America’s Cup Viaduct Basin, Project Manukau, the Otira Viaduct, the Auckland Harbour Bridge retrofit and the Grafton Gully Motorway.
Toan has been instrumental in Beca's development of innovative applications such as Mudcrete, injection grouting to repair concrete and the application of temperature-time to achieve full concrete strength in less than four days.
