“I believe the diversity Beca offers, arising from the consultancy’s size and scale, is second to none.”
Trent enjoys looking at the world from a spatial perspective, considering how features on the Earth’s surface relate to one another. Spatial analysis for projects is just one of his roles as a Beca GIS specialist, where his core skill is to develop specialised software for Geographic Information Systems.
Trent’s background includes running the GIS system for a large Auckland water reticulation network. This experience in dealing with local authorities as well as the networks he established during this time made his transition into the consultancy arena an easy one.
Trent has recently been working on transportation congestion monitoring surveys for Auckland’s motorway network. From floating vehicle surveys (using GPS units) conducted three times daily for a week, a proprietary system processes large amounts of data into meaningful statistics that depict the state of traffic congestion.
ther recent work in transportation has included building a detailed GIS dataset for the Auckland motorway network. This data then provides the basis for a number of sophisticated management and reporting systems.
Trent believes the professional support and opportunities on hand at Beca make the organisation an ideal starting point for graduates. “Beca has the scale and necessary opportunities along the way to take someone from a graduate through their entire career,” he says. “Graduates in GIS have the opportunity to be exposed to ‘hands-on’ experience under the guidance of very experienced people, and that is invaluable.”
