“I strongly believe that the key to a successful consulting firm is exemplary client service and relationships.”
Matthew is an Associate and Senior Structural Engineer in Beca’s Wellington office. His role consists of leading project teams to deliver quality outcomes for Beca’s clients. He is also involved with business development, which includes looking for new project opportunities, developing client relationships and preparing bids.
After graduating from the University of Canterbury, Matthew worked for a consultancy in Wellington before moving to London for overseas experience. There, he worked as a structural engineer for Price & Myers LLP – a firm renowned for its ability to work closely with architects in producing innovative engineering solutions. He joined Beca in late 2005, and has since been involved in driving technical development in the Wellington Structural team and creating and running training programmes for graduate engineers.
The most significant project for Matthew to date has been the new BNZ Building at Harbour Quays in Wellington, where he was responsible for leading the structural design and construction monitoring of the new building. The design came with a number of challenges, including building on reclaimed land, which had to be vibro-improved, and the seismic design of the three building piers which are linked together with pedestrian bridges.
“I believe it is essential to understand and empathise with the architectural design vision to ensure our structural solutions are aligned,” he says. “Innovation plays a big role in solving the challenges of integrating structure with architecture, and I am enthusiastic about using structure in new and exciting ways to achieve the desired result.”
