"Fire engineering is about practical, well justified solutions that seamlessly integrate into the architectural vision of the building."
Daryn has a sound understanding of fire and its effects. He spent the early part of his career as an operational fire fighter in the military crash rescue and urban fire environment. After 12 years he then applied his experience to technical fire engineering, firstly in the New Zealand Fire Service Design Review Unit and since 2008 in a consulting environment with Beca.
From transportation infrastructure to commercial buildings and on shore petrochemical projects, Daryn has extensive regulatory review and fire engineering design experience. He led the fire engineering inputs on several recent high profile projects in New Zealand, including the Eden Park redevelopment, Middlemore Hospital clinical services building, Taranaki Base Hospital acute services building and technical verification of the Mount Eden Prison redevelopment.
The freedom and respect Beca gives to its employees keeps the job unique and exciting for Daryn. "They allow me to explore innovation in my designs by encouraging me to think outside the box and to avoid reproducing standard solutions," he says.
Daryn believes Beca's key strength lies in the support of its people – both employees and our clients. "It is this support that develops competent and highly skilled employees who work with valued and satisfied clients."
Daryn is also heavily involved in the fire engineering community as an affiliate member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and was recently the Executive Director for the Institution of Fire Engineers.
