"Building strong relationships with clients and a mutual culture of collaboration and good communication is essential to successful projects."
As a Technical Director for Buildings Services, Pat strives to achieve a fully integrated design approach on all his projects. He believes building strong relationships with clients, collaboration and good communication is essential on buildings projects. This is affirmed by clients who particularly appreciate his ability to understand key drivers, especially during a project's concept stage, where Pat's role is to assist in moulding their objectives and needs into a way forward.
Based in Beca's Wellington office, Pat has been involved in some of the region's most exciting and challenging buildings. From an artistic family, he particularly enjoys working on cultural and heritage projects such as Embassy Theatre, St James Theatre, Te Papa, the proposed New Zealand School of Music and Invercargill's Civic Theatre. He is also heavily involved in healthcare projects, relishing their highly technical and challenging nature. A recent example was the new Wellington Regional Hospital, where Pat worked with the emergency management team to assist in establishing the post disaster provisions for essential services.
Pat also manages the Commercial Office market segment for Beca across New Zealand, and has recently been working on several new 5 Star Green Star office buildings on Wellington's waterfront.
During projects, Pat particularly likes the way Beca gives engineers and designers the freedom to produce innovative designs. "The projects we attract continue to be interesting, challenging and varied," he says. "The key to delivering on these projects lies in our ability to effectively communicate engineering schemes and design options – something I consistently strive for during a project's early stages."
Pat considers communication among project teams to be one of the key strengths of Beca. "Our 'one Beca' approach to multi-disciplinary projects is often what sets us apart from our competitors."
