"I derive great satisfaction from starting a project as a concept on a blank piece of paper, then working with the architect to help achieve their vision."
Scott is a Technical Director in Building Services, looking after key clients such as SKYCITY, and involved in all aspects of building services design through to construction monitoring on commercial building projects. As a LEED Accredited Professional his focus is on incorporating green features into building design. In Scott's other role as Retail Market Segment Manager, he is responsible for developing Beca Buildings' involvement in the retail sector.
Scott joined Beca as a graduate in 1995, followed by two years as a Resident Engineer on a large project in Jakarta. He left the company in pursuit of new challenges, working on major airport projects in the UK, and as a mechanical engineer on large retail and commercial projects in Canada. He rejoined Beca in 2008.
Recent projects include the NZ$90 million AUT WG Precinct on the Wellesley Street campus, a 12-storey tower in Auckland's CBD accommodating 4,000 students, and the US$750 million Constanera Center in Chile, which includes the largest office tower in South America. As well as the variety of jobs, Scott enjoys the challenge of getting to know clients and understanding their drivers for a particular project.
Thinking back to being a graduate he believes Beca helped him in a number of ways in his career. "Although Beca is a large company, it is remarkably well grounded. As a graduate you have easy access to senior people for guidance and advice," he says. "In addition, there is relevant training, interesting projects, overseas travel, and the opportunity to move within the organisation to allow you to develop the career you want."
