Mike is a regional manager with a passion for working with people who thrive on technical challenges.
With his technical, project-related background, Mike finds his current position as Beca’s regional manager in Wellington provides him with new challenges and experiences to further develop his career.
Mike’s civil engineering career has included working on water & waste projects as well as a number of general infrastructure projects such as commercial buildings, roads and highways. Mike finds working in a large organisation such as Beca hugely rewarding because there are the opportunities to work on a multitude of different projects and with team members from a variety of disciplines.
One of the projects Mike found most inspiring was working in Fiji on the Water Supply Pipeline in 2002. This 900mm diameter pipeline services a water treatment plant feeding the Nadi area as well as a mini hydro scheme. Given the environment in Fiji, where maintenance and expertise can be unreliable, the project team was under pressure to come up with a solution that would suit the limited maintenance facilities and available skills to operate.
The outcome was a system that, although complex, can be operated and maintained in an uncomplicated and near fail-safe way. This, along with the usual constraints of working in a remote Pacific Island environment, made for a very challenging and yet rewarding project.
Mike believes that Beca embraces staff members' enthusiasm to strive for success; and there is a great deal of support for individuals to develop in any area they have a passion for. “There are very few inhibitors for progression in Beca other than the limitations you place on yourself as an individual,” he says.
Mike finds enjoyment and satisfaction in working closely with his team at Beca because they are “self-motivated and enthusiastic, with a good strong work ethic and a positive outlook on life”.
