Airport Infrastructure

Auckland Airport Northern Runway Stage 1

Developing New Zealand's Gateway

Auckland Airport Northern Runway.

Extensive knowledge of Auckland Airport's business and master planning objectives has helped Beca to provide workable solutions for long term infrastructure development in a dynamic industry.

The development of a second runway at Auckland Airport is critical in consolidating its role as the principal gateway to New Zealand. With the growing number and increasing types of aircraft it will enable better use of the existing runway, and the capacity to meet future demands.

Beca is providing multi-disciplinary services, including project management, planning, design, cost management and construction management.

The new runway will be north of and parallel to the existing main runway, and is planned ultimately to be 2150m in length. It is being developed in stages, determined by a number of factors including the demand for capacity on the existing southern runway and aprons.
Beca has been involved from an early stage, working with the client to:

  • define the project drivers and objectives
  • scope the project within the parameters of the Auckland Airport master plan
  • plan for future development
  • identify and select options
  • facilitate the risk management process
  • manage stakeholders
  • assistance in business case preparation.

Stage 1 involves the construction of a 1200m long runway, and will be capable of operating small, non-jet aircraft. The smaller aircraft typically service flights to New Zealand’s provincial cities, regional towns and communities.
