Tyrone Newson has over ten years experience working as a project manager, and during the last five his main focus has been on project management of infrastructure, commercial retail and airport terminal construction projects for Beca.

The benefits Maori and Pacific communities can reap from the engineering profession are of personal interest to Tyrone. He was one of the founding members of South Pacific Engineering Excellence Inc. (SPPEEx) in 2003, an organisation that seeks to promote indigenous design and engineering within the built environment. He served as SPPEEx Chairman in 2007.

In the same year Tyrone was named New Zealand Young Engineer of the Year at the New Zealand Engineering Excellence Awards. Honoured to receive such an award, Tyrone hopes to encourage other young Maori and Pacific engineers to pursue an engineering career so that they can contribute to their communities.

In addition to his contribution to the engineering profession and the community, the Award recognised Tyrone for his outstanding work on the Domestic Terminal Retail Development project at Auckland Airport. The completed project connects the existing Air New Zealand and Qantas domestic terminals and provides a link between both terminals to a recently completed multi-storey carpark.

Other projects Tyrone has worked on include a multi-tower, multi-storey mixed use development incorporating a Novotel Hotel and the fitout of the new 5 Star Crowne Plaza Hotel housing a number of specialist restaurants in Dubai.

Tyrone says Beca’s support has provided him with the mentoring, experience and training necessary for obtaining both the CPEng and Project Management Professional Qualifications. This support has helped to guide him in career and in his work with SPPEEx.

Tyrone will be furthering his career goals by working from Beca’s Dubai office, working on multi-storey offshore construction projects.
