“From day one I had work to do and within a month I was in charge of my own work packages; so you get to be reasonably independent but still get a lot of support and help from more experienced people around you.”
Beca’s longstanding relationship with NZ Steel has allowed many graduates to flourish. A permanent role on site is currently accommodating Monica Pitman’s passion for ‘getting things done’.
“Instead of sitting in an office doing calcs and hoping something happens with them, I get to see physical progress, working on projects from start to finish,” she enthuses.
Instant client feedback is another on-site plus. “Being there when things are installed means you know whether they’ve worked or not, and whether the client is happy. One-on-one relationships with clients make the job more purposeful. That accountability is a great training tool.”
After graduating, Monica was keen to work on big and interesting jobs. “Beca’s sheer size and position within the market place means they always have challenging work, plus there’s room to move around if you want to. They’ve got the ability to put the right people into the right jobs.”
“NZ Steel is so big that you’re always dealing with different clients and no two jobs are the same. Placing an order for tens of thousands of dollars, all based on my own work was a proud moment. It’s very cool seeing something you’ve designed and organised turn up on site.”
