Transportation Engineer / Auckland

Martin Peat

“As a recent graduate, Beca’s diversity has given me the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of projects.”

Martin Peat - Transportation Engineer.

Martin is a graduate transportation engineer in the Transportation Modelling team at Beca’s Auckland office. He graduated in 2008 with a BE (Engineering Science) and went on to complete a Masters in Engineering in early 2009.

Martin has focused on optimisation and computer modelling in his studies, and his final year engineering project involved the development of a simulation model to look at the bottleneck effect of a one-lane bridge on truck movements at the Tiwai Point Aluminium smelter. Martin’s thesis was based on optimising the running of a small hydro-power station, which also included a simulation model of New Zealand electricity prices.

Since joining Beca Martin has enjoyed applying the skills learned at university to transportation modelling assignments. He has been involved in a wide variety of projects, ranging from the analysis and collation of data for traffic congestion monitoring projects in major New Zealand cities, to strategic modelling projects such as Auckland’s Western Ring Route, and testing new development projects in SATURN.

These project experiences have been invaluable to the progression of Martin’s technical career. “Working at Beca has been a great experience. In particular, working on a few longer term projects has enabled me to widen my skills overall, but also to develop more specialised transportation skills,” he says. This, combined with opportunities for training and personal development, will give Martin the opportunity to excel in the Transportation section, as well as the wider Beca group.
