Civil Engineer / Tauranga

"Beca’s investment in graduates really stands out."

Kip Cooper.

Taking advantage of the shortage of engineers in Australasia, Kip moved to New Zealand from his native Yorkshire to make the most of the wider experience on offer.

He works in the Tauranga office and has found Beca to be a company that supports and encourages young people.
Kip says, “Beca has so many senior engineers who have been out there and done it all and they are quite happy to pass on their knowledge. I’ve been surprised at how approachable they are.”

Kip has enjoyed the opportunity to play a part in a wide variety of projects – from geotechnical work to initial conceptual design to site supervision. A highlight has been working on a sustainable design problem for a school in the Marshall Islands, which are located halfway between Indonesia and Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. In his own time, he has also twice travelled to Fiji with a team of volunteers to provide much needed aid to a remote village.

The level of investment in people at Beca was particularly apparent at the two-day graduate conference where Kip’s fellow graduates impressed him with their motivation and high calibre. Kip said they felt more like members of the same club, rather than participants in the standard issue graduate programme.

Kip has lately been given time off to tour schools and universities, teaching students about the benefits of following a career in engineering.
