Beca Named Best NZ In-house Legal Team

The New Zealand Law Awards celebrate excellence in client service by law firms and barristers as judged by their clients, and by in-house legal teams as judged by their legal peers.

The award was judged on the ability of each applicant to provide excellence in client service, to play an integral role within the senior management team and business, and to demonstrate independence and strong governance.

In evaluating Beca’s in-house legal section, the judges commented, "This legal team copes admirably with handling, astutely and strategically, a complex cocktail of relentless business pressures in helping with winning new projects, contract negotiations, risk assessments, complex insurance arrangements, and highly specialised legal advice”.

Chye Heng, CFO and executive director, is the head of Beca’s legal team and says "The recent awards Beca has won, such as the NZTE International Business Supreme Award, the BST Award for Leadership, Innovation and Excellence, the Induction of Sir Ron Carter and George Beca (posthumously) into the Fairfax Business Hall of Fame, and this Law Award exemplify what our founder Sir Ron Carter has always said, that while Beca is certainly an engineering business, it is first and foremost a business. Our success in these areas attests to the strong and diverse skills of our people that Beca draws on to deliver results."

Beca's employee shareholding model means that its senior in-house lawyers are also shareholders in the business, alongside the engineers and consultants that they advise.
